Bridget Riley is internationally acclaimed for her iconic geometric paintings that became synonymous with the Op Art movement of the 1960s. Blending elements of modernist abstraction and visual poetry, Riley’s work explores themes of perception, rhythm, and movement.

However Riley also painted directly onto gallery walls allowing the audience to draw themselves closer into the work than would be possible with a painting on canvas.

Cherub, a screenprint on paper created in 2020, exemplifies Riley’s continued exploration of optical phenomena. Released in line with her exhibition Learning to See at Turner Contemporary, the print was made to capture the intrigue of her wall paintings and continue her exploration of optical phenomena.

In celebration of Springtime, this month’s featured artwork from Clifton Gallery is Damien Hirst’s ‘Justice’, a laminated giclée print on aluminium from his celebrated Virtues series.

Damien Hirst’s iconic Justice features his famous blooming cherry blossom paintings. Hirst spent a significant proportion of his recent career studying cherry blossom and this series celebrates the beauty and elegance of the plant.

He created The Virtues, an eight-part series, each titled after one of The Eight Virtues of Bushidō according to Nitobe Inazō – Justice, Courage, Mercy, Politeness, Honesty, Honour, Loyalty, Control.

In 1996, Tracey Emin locked herself naked in an enclosed studio setting at a gallery for 3 weeks to reconcile with her anxieties and guilt around painting, a medium she had stopped 6 years prior.

The result is ‘Exorcism of the Last Painting I Ever Made’, currently on display at Tate Modern as part of her retrospective ‘A Second Life’.

Following last night’s impressive sale at Fair Warning New York where Banksy’s ‘Girl and Balloon on Found Landscape, 2012’ sold for $18,000,000, take a look at this artist’s celebrated motif.

First stencilled on a London wall in 2002, Banksy’s Girl with Balloon motif is one of the most recognisable in contemporary art. Used multiple times within the artists oeuvre, this example was created as part of his Crude Oil where vintage oil paintings were reimagined with Banksy’s twist.

With an estimate of $13,000,000-$18,000,000, this sale becomes Banksy’s third-highest price art auction and represents further consolidation of Banksy’s position within contemporary art history as an enduring cultural authority at auction.

A celebration of French design, the de Gunzburg Collection, currently being sold at Sotheby’s, stands as one of the most significant assemblages of design ever to come to auction.

The collection was drawn primarily from the de Gunzburgs’ New York apartment, which was decorated in a style described as ‘New York on the outside, Paris on the inside.’

Their collection of contemporary works features sculptural furniture by Jean-Michel Frank, Jean Royère and André Groult. As well as the centre piece of the collection, a group of 15 fantastical gilt-bronze mirrors designed by Claude Lalanne for Yves Saint Laurent. Also included in the collection are rare paintings by Mark Rothko, Pablo Picasso, Agnes Martin, Paul Klee, Damien Hirst and more.
