Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor, arguably best known for his innovative abstract 3D mobiles and monumental sculptures where he pushed traditional sculpture, combined with his iconic colour palette. He had immense creative spirit and explored a diverse mix of mediums including sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking - also working on set design, jewellery design and large scale sculpture and installation. Calder’s work features his iconic, bold colour palette which is instantly recognisable. He received countless awards and recognition throughout his career and his work is held in numerous permanent collections around the world.
