Antony Gormley (born 1950) is a British artist famous for his exploration of the human form, and is possibly best known for his monumental sculptures such as the Angel Of The North. Gormley studied archaeology, anthropology, and the history of art at Cambridge and went on to study Buddhist meditation in India and Sri Lanka. He returned to London to study at Goldsmith’s and later sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work focusses on the body, including his own, treating the body as a place and exploring the human form in the context of its environment. Gormley’s work spans sculpture, printmaking, drawing and painting - often starting with an outline of the body in ink and printmaking to show the curved form of the human body, or abstraction to scale up his metal sculptures with interesting angles. Gormley has exhibited extensively internationally and has created several large scale installations that can be found around the world. He won the Turner Prize in 1994, was appointed OBE in 1998, appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2003 and knighted in 2014.
