Jean-Michel Basquiat lived an interesting life. Born in 1960 in Brooklyn, New York, Basquiat graffiti’d as part of the duo SAMO in the 1970s and saw great success during the 1980s when his paintings started being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. His art features text, images, diagrams, figures and abstract mark making and his iconic crown - combined to portray culture themes such as wealth and integration with deep meaning. He was an extremely famous artist before and after his death, aged 27, and his artwork is now found in numerous collections and museums globally. Basquiat’s artwork, Untitled, broke the record for the most expensive artwork sold by an American artist when Sotheby’s sold it for $110.5 million in 2017.
