Wayne Thiebaud (1920–2021) was an American painter known for his richly textured depictions of everyday objects, desserts, and landscapes. Born in Arizona, and raised in California, he worked as a commercial artist before gaining recognition in the early 1960s. Associated with Pop Art, Thiebaud’s style was distinct, blending thick, expressive brushstrokes and strong shadows with a focus on colour and form. His works explore themes of nostalgia, American consumer culture, and the passage of time. However, unlike the mechanical repetition of Pop Art, Thiebaud’s work emphasised painterly technique and the physicality of paint, drawing influence from Impressionism and Realism. Thiebaud's paintings are housed in major museums and galleries around the globe such as MoMA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
